How do I train to be a Graphic Designer?

There are two paths of learning when training to be a graphic designer so how do you choose which is the right path for you?

Option I - A University Degree in Graphic Design

If you choose to take a degree in Graphic Design there are some things you should be aware of first. A degree course in Graphic Design takes on average four years and candidate for a university placement usually has some kind of experience in the field of graphic design and will need to submit a portfolio showing the work and experience that has already been accumulated.

Option II – A Professional Certification Course in Graphic Design

These courses can be found in various educational institutions, from local colleges to web based colleges and are available to anyone who is interested in getting into the field of Graphic Design. These courses usually run for a few months or up to one year and on completion you will gain certification as well as a portfolio of the work that has been done throughout the course. The course will train you to operate the various software programs used in Graphic Design, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and so on as well as giving you practical hands on experience. A Professional training certificate will allow you to seek employment in the field of Graphic Design or can be used as a foundation when applying for a degree course at a university.

Whichever path you decide to take you need to be committed to a career full of creativity and continual learning. Newer versions of current softwares are constantly being released and as the technology develops new programs will be released.
